چکیده

Elucidating causal relationship among variables of interests is critical to epidemiological studies. Such studies often involve mediational models, and require appropriate statistical assessment of mediational effects. However, the current statistical methodologies used to assess mediational effect are limited to linear association. Here, we propose a new definition of mediational effects for a class of generalized mediational models, and estimate the mediational effects through Bayesian modeling and Markov chain Monte Carol (MCMC) techniques. In an earlier study, we showed that, under linear association, our method comes to the same results as the existing methods. Here, we focus on demonstrating how one can apply our method to a generalized mediational model using logistic mediational model as an example. Simulation studies are used to compare the asymptotic and the non-informative Bayesian estimates for the mediation effects. Case studies are presented to illustrate the application of the proposed method to public health research using a nationally representative database.

Group Dynamic Assessment: An Inventory of Mediational Strategies for Teaching Listening

Group dynamic assessment (G-DA) grounded in Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory (SCT) is believed to have the potential to provide a context for capturing a group of learners’ Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) (Poehner & Lantolf, 2010; Shabani, 2010). The present study aims at testing the applicability of G-DA in identifying the mediational strategies offered by a mediator during his G-DA interac...

Power Analysis for Complex Mediational Designs Using Monte Carlo Methods.

Applied researchers often include mediation effects in applications of advanced methods such as latent variable models and linear growth curve models. Guidance on how to estimate statistical power to detect mediation for these models has not yet been addressed in the literature. We describe a general framework for power analyses for complex mediational models. The approach is based on the well ...

Distinguishing Mediational Models and Analyses in Clinical Psychology: Atemporal Associations Do Not Imply Causation.

PURPOSE A popular way to attempt to discern causality in clinical psychology is through mediation analysis. However, mediation analysis is sometimes applied to research questions in clinical psychology when inferring causality is impossible. This practice may soon increase with new, readily available, and easy-to-use statistical advances. Thus, we here provide a heuristic to remind clinical psy...

Multilevel Modeling of Individual and Group Level Mediated Effects.

This article combines procedures for single-level mediational analysis with multilevel modeling techniques in order to appropriately test mediational effects in clustered data. A simulation study compared the performance of these multilevel mediational models with that of single-level mediational models in clustered data with individual- or group-level initial independent variables, individual-...

Disorganized attachment, absorption, and new age spirituality: a mediational model.

In this paper, we present a theoretical model and an empirical review linking disorganized attachment with New Age spiritual beliefs and activities via a proposed mediator; the propensity to enter altered states of consciousness (absorption/dissociation). Utilizing a prospective longitudinal design (N = 62), an empirical test of the mediational model is also provided for illustrational purposes...
